THE OLIPOP LAWSUIT, EXPLAINED

Confused about the Olipop lawsuit? Want our perspective? Looking for another healthy soda option? Read on.

Olipop is a soda alternative that claims to be high in fiber and low in sugar. However, upon further examination, there isn’t as much fiber as advertised, and to actually consume the amount of fiber on the label, you’d have to drink multiple cans, which would in turn, drive up your sugar intake.

The false advertising has been misleading consumers, which is why there is a lawsuit against them. 

The 4Q take: At 4Q Method, we weren’t a fan of Olipop to begin with. Unless there were a medical reason for it, we’d never encourage anyone to get their fiber from a beverage. If your diet is balanced, you can reach your recommended fiber intake from whole foods alone – no beverages, powders, or supplements necessary. 

As for the sugar content, while Olipop may be low in added sugar, it does contain Stevia, which is a non-nutritive sweetener, and at 4Q Method we aren’t ever really a fan of those. (You can read more on why that is here.) 

The bottom line: We understand why consumers are upset, but perhaps this should be a sign that when things seem too good to be true, they often are.

So what should you do if you’re looking for a soda alternative that is good for your gut? Sip on some kombucha instead. The carbonation and sweet flavor give you the feel of soda while the probiotics help foster a healthy microbiome in your gut.
