IS A COLOSTRUM SUPPLEMENT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Colostrum, also known as “liquid gold”, is produced by the mother in the first few days after giving birth. It is called liquid gold because of how rich it is in nutrients, antibodies, and antioxidants, which are essential to nourishing newborns and building their immune systems. Recently, colostrum from cows has become popular as a supplement for adults in response to companies touting its many health benefits. The question is: should you be supplementing? Let’s see below.

Is colostrum beneficial for adults?

According to preliminary research, there are some benefits to taking colostrum. It has been shown to prevent upper respiratory illness in athletes. And in healthy and sick adults, it has helped reduce inflammation by modulating the immune response as well as mitigate leaky gut by reducing intestinal permeability.

So why shouldn’t we all be taking it?

  • Because there is so little research on colostrum, further studies need to be done to be able to say with confidence that everybody could benefit from taking colostrum as a supplement.

  • Supplements are also not regulated by the FDA, so the less supplements we need to rely on, the better.

The bottom line:

If you’re healthy and your diet is well-balanced, then you are likely better off not taking a supplement you don’t truly need.

If you suffer from leaky gut, inflammation, etc. and your diet is not well-balanced, your first line of defense should be fixing what you’re eating.

But if your diet is pristine and you’re still suffering, colostrum might be a great option for you. Just make sure that your colostrum supplement is third-party tested to help with regulating an otherwise unregulated product.

Also, note that colostrum is considered dairy, so if you don’t consume dairy for any reason, this supplement is not for you.
